Ottawa Rules Out National Digital ID in Response to Petition Presented by MP

Ottawa says it has no plans to introduce a mandatory national digital identification system and is instead prioritizing a billion-dollar project to modernize how Canadians access federal benefits and government services online. The commitment came in the federal government’s Aug. 19 response to a House of Commons e-petition sponsored by Conservative MP Leslyn Lewis, which called on Parliament to reject current and future proposals for a national digital ID.

Russian Strike on Kyiv-Area Ammunition Depot Triggers Blast, Killing 37

KYIV—At least 37 people were killed after a Russian drone attack on a Kyiv-area ammunition depot sparked a detonation, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday, vowing to punish suspected negligence in the second such incident in two months. The deadliest Russian strike in the Kyiv area this year came as Moscow’s air attacks on the Ukrainian capital and surrounding region dragged into a third straight day, killing residents, damaging homes and derailing daily life. Dozens were also injured and hundreds evacuated from the area of the strike late on Friday on the village of Myla, Zelenskyy said, where nearby infrastructure including residential buildings and a facility for the elderly and people with disabilities suffered “significant damage”....

Aussie Families Cling to Hope in Nepal Flood Search

Family members of Australians missing in the Nepal flood disaster are hoping for good news while facing a devastating reality. Disability support worker and mother of twin daughters Renee Spry was making a pilgrimage with the Isha Foundation when the deadly inundation hit on Wednesday morning. Her last known location was at an immigration office along the Nepal-Tibet border, the destruction of which was captured in widely shared footage. Describing her sister as a deeply spiritual person, Clair Spry told AAP that Renee had been planning and looking forward to her journey to the pilgrimage site of Mount Kailash for a long time....

Pacific Summit No Shows Won’t Impact Albanese Visit

The prime minister will still attend a summit of Pacific nations despite several key leaders pulling out at the eleventh hour. Anthony Albanese will fly out to Palau on Monday to attend the Pacific Islands Forum at a time of growing tensions in the region. But Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale will be a no-show at the event, after a no-confidence motion was lodged against him by Home Affairs Minister Manasseh Maelanga. Australia has been in negotiations with the Solomons on a security treaty, with the hopes further negotiations could have taken place on the sidelines of the summit. Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and his Vanuatu counterpart Jotham Napat will also not be attending, with Samoan leader La’auli Leuatea Schmidt another notable absence.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford Unveils ‘Lake Ontario’ Sign

Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Aug. 29 unveiled a “Lake Ontario” sign by the lake at Fifty Point Conservation Area in Hamilton in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the lake “Lake America.” Meanwhile, on the same day, Trump shared apparently AI-generated videos on his Truth Social accounts focused on the lake, with one video showing him replacing a sign reading “Lake Ontario” with one reading “Lake America,” and another video showing armed “Donald Ducks” walking by the lake. As he unveiled the new sign, Ford said that the lake was named “Lake Ontario” long before Trump was in office and would continue to be named such after Trump’s departure from office, he said.

Family of Canadians Missing in Nepal Floods on Edge as They Wait for Information

The brother of a Canadian man among those missing after flash floods swept through an area along the Nepal-Tibet border says their family is on edge waiting for information. Dhaval Shah and his wife Megha Shah, from Port Moody, B.C., were on a spiritual journey in Nepal when the floods hit. Dhaval’s brother Kheval Shah, reached at his home in Mumbai, India, said his family is desperate to know if they’ve been rescued or found.

BC Premier Calls Byelection in Riding Where Conservative Leader Findlay Is Set to Run

B.C. Premier David Eby has called a byelection for September in Abbotsford-Mission, where B.C. Conservative Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay plans to run. Eby announced the byelection for Sept. 26 on Saturday after the riding was left vacant by the resignation of Conservative MLA Reann Gasper earlier this month. Gasper stepped down to make way for Findlay, who was elected leader of the party in May and does not currently hold a seat. Gasper has since taken a position as Findlay’s deputy chief of staff. The B.C. NDP announced Saturday that Pam Alexis, who represented the riding from 2020 until losing it in last year’s election, will seek to reclaim the seat. Alexis, a former agriculture minister and former mayor of Mission, was defeated by fewer than 3,000 votes in 2024.
