Carney Rejects Trump’s Renaming of Lake Ontario
Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s signing of an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America, saying the body of water will always keep its original name. Carney said in a statement on Aug. 27 that the lake’s name is more than 400 years old and comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.” He added that the lake’s name therefore predates both the Confederation of Canada and the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. “We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms,” Carney said. “Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.”

The union representing American air traffic controllers has acknowledged allegations that two members left work early shortly before an Air Canada regional jet crashed at LaGuardia Airport in March, killing two pilots. Air Canada Suspends Two Employees After RCMP Drug Trafficking Investigation
Air Canada says it has suspended the two employees arrested by the RCMP on Wednesday in connection with alleged cocaine and cannabis trafficking out of Montréal-Trudeau Airport. The airline would not comment further on the arrests. The RCMP says it released the two workers. The force says they could face charges for allegedly participating in a conspiracy to move luggage into the airport’s secure areas to facilitate importing cocaine and exporting cannabis. The investigation began in May, after the Canada Border Services Agency intercepted 62.5 kg of cocaine in backpacks on a flight from Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic.

Snowbirds Alumni Launch Petition to Gauge Support for ‘No Pause’ Campaign
As Ottawa prepares to ground the Snowbirds aerobatic team at the end of this season, the alumni association is seeking to influence decision-makers by launching a petition to keep the squadron airborne. The Snowbirds Alumni Association created a Change.org petition called “No Pause: Keep the Snowbirds Flying and Inspiring,” earlier this month. It had garnered more than 4,000 verified signatures as of Aug. 27. Former Manitoba MP Facing 26 New Weapons Charges in RCMP Firearms Trafficking Probe
Former Manitoba MP and Dauphin Mayor Inky Mark is facing new weapons-related charges after being arrested and charged in July as part of an ongoing RCMP firearms trafficking investigation. Mark was charged with gun trafficking and several other firearms-related charges last month after police reported seizing 439 guns, an antique cannon, ammunition, and more than $300,000 in cash from his western Manitoba home near the city of Dauphin. RCMP announced this week that the 78-year-old former politician was re-arrested on new charges on Aug. 12 as part of its investigation. Investigators have been cataloguing all the confiscated items since Mark’s arrest, the RCMP said in an Aug. 26 press release. Police have since determined 445 firearms were taken from the home and said 295 of them were “unsafely stored.”
