Damaging Storms Leave Large Swaths of Southern Ontario Without Electricity

Thousands of residents in the Greater Toronto Area and sections of Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe continue to be without power after a powerful storm caused flooding, toppled trees, and brought down utility lines. The City of Toronto announced on its website that several services have been affected by the thunderstorm that brought heavy rain, damaging winds, and large hail to the region.

Severe Storms Sweep Ontario, Bringing Flooding, Power Outages to Toronto Area

A heavy thunderstorm in the Toronto area has led to flooding and damages to buildings, with many vehicles stranded and residents left without power. Environment Canada issued an alert on Sept. 2 afternoon warning of torrential rain and large hail in southern Ontario, urging residents to take cover in a basement or interior room if they’re in affected areas. The agency lifted its alerts for the Toronto area later on Sept. 2, while alerts remained in place for parts of southern Ontario. When Canadian cryptocurrency entrepreneur Harry Chun Tak Yeh plunged to his death from a high-rise in Paraguay in August, the circumstances drew attention to a decidedly low-tech threat facing the high-tech world of digital assets: physical violence. Physical attacks on cryptocurrency holders—known as “wrench attacks”—have risen for three straight years. Yeh’s death has prompted speculation within the crypto community that he may have been targeted in just such an attack. The Hong Kong-born founder of Quantum Fintech Group fell from the 30th floor of a luxury residential tower in Asunción on Aug. 7.
