BC Conservatives Lead NDP With 5 Percent Bump in Poll Since Findlay Elected as Leader

The B.C. Tories are slightly ahead of the province’s governing NDP in a poll conducted since Kerry-Lynne Findlay became leader of the party. The party now sits at 45 five percent support among decided voters compared to the NDP’s 41 percent, according to a Leger poll conducted June 1 and 2. A previous poll by Leger conducted in early April had the BC Conservatives at 40 percent, suggesting the party gained five percentage points since. “Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s leadership is also beginning to shape perceptions of the BC Conservatives, though many British Columbians are still getting to know her,” Leger noted in a June 5 statement on the latest poll. “Awareness of the leadership change is high, but familiarity with Findlay remains limited, leaving room for opinions to shift as she becomes more visible.”

Liberal MP Erskine-Smith Confirms Plans to Leave Federal Politics in Supporter Email

Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith has sent an email to supporters confirming he will resign his seat in the House of Commons and inviting volunteers to an event to celebrate his decade of public service. He was elected in Beaches-East York in 2015 and briefly served as housing minister in Justin Trudeau’s final cabinet and Mark Carney’s first cabinet. Erskine-Smith’s email does not say whether he still plans to run for the Ontario Liberal leadership. His plans to jump to the provincial party hit a snag last month when he lost the Liberal nomination for a byelection in a seat in Toronto.

Competition Tribunal Orders Google to Pay More Than $358,000 in Watchdog’s Costs

Google has been ordered to cover about $358,000 in fees the competition commissioner amassed when successfully fighting the tech giant on a constitutional challenge. The Competition Tribunal said the amount reflects that the work required was both important and complex. Google will now have to pay more than $277,600 to cover expert fees, $54,000 for legal fees and about $26,600 for transcripts and printing.
