Radio Waves
- Abstract
-
First theorized by James Clerk Maxwell in the 1860s and proven experimentally by Heinrich Hertz in 1888, radio waves are electromagnetic waves spanning frequencies from 3 Hz to 300 GHz. Commercialized by Guglielmo Marconi in the late 19th century — despite a contested patent claim by Nikola Tesla — they went on to underpin modern civilization's most essential technologies, from AM/FM broadcasting and radar to Wi-Fi, GPS, and MRI imaging. Beyond their practical applications, radio waves reveal a deeper story: the universe itself speaks in radio, from the Sun's corona to the faint cosmic microwave background, the 13.8-billion-year-old echo of the Big Bang.
