I ate the lies, and got sick.
In an age of polarization, this reflection explores what true freedom looks like: not agreement at all costs, but the capacity to honor people — even when we profoundly disagree. From Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden to Ross Ulbricht and Donald Trump, the piece wrestles with moral complexity, hypocrisy, and the double-edged sword of modern power. It closes with a hopeful look at Bitcoin — a system built on neutrality and permissionlessness — as a model for principled freedom that transcends party lines and culture wars.
Because the truth endures when the world forgets. The Word stands firm when everything else falls. And the glory of God — the crucified, risen, forgiving Jesus — is still shining, still calling, still healing, still saving. So look to Him. Not to the crowd. Not to the opinions of others. Look to the One Isaiah saw, the One lifted up for your salvation. Look to His cross, His wounds, His mercy. That’s the glory that matters. That’s the glory that lasts.
The blind man did not analyze mercy; he received it. He cried for it and received it. So also here. At the altar, mercy is distributed in the most concrete way possible. At the altar, sinners who confess, “Have mercy on me,” are given Christ. Sins are forgiven. Faith is strengthened. Eyes are opened again and again. And this changes you.
What to do with all of that hair.
Chapter 3. Would you still walk it?
Ash Wednesday is not merely about dust. It is about dust claimed by God. It is about sinners marked not only with ashes but with the cross. The same forehead that hears, “Remember that you are dust,” was once washed with water and the Word. In Holy Baptism, you were buried with Christ and raised with Him. The ashes do not erase that. They intensify it.
St. Jude will not let us grow comfortable: the Lord saved a people out of Egypt and then destroyed those who would not believe. Faith can die, and a baptized man can become a cloud without water — all the look of a Christian with no rain in him. But the same Lord who judged the unbelieving in the wilderness comes down the mountain to a demon-tormented boy and a father who can barely pray, and He is faithful where our faith is little. Our safety is not the strength of our grip on Christ but His grip on us.
June Crime Report
The new commandment is a finished love. Christ made it on a cross. He gives it to you here in water and word and bread and wine. It is yours. The commandment and the gift are one. Faith and love are baked together like one loaf. Christ holds the one, and you hold the other, and there is no separating them. Christ went where you could not go, so that you could love as you have been loved.
Chapter 1. Some futures are built one certificate at a time while others fade while we're busy building them.
We all need a loving mother to nurture and guide us, to give us insight and advice, to protect us and lead us out of trouble.
