§What Actually Got Built

Clients: Damus (iOS), Amethyst (Android), Primal (both), Nostrudel (web), Snort (web), Highlighter — all actively maintained

Infrastructure: Relay software (strfry, nostream), relay hosting services, NIP-26 delegations, NIP-46 crypto wallets, NIP-59 gift wraps

Adoption: Genuine userbase in the 100k-500k active range. Not mainstream. But real.

§What Works

• DMs: NIP-04 and NIP-17 encrypted DMs actually work. No Signal required for nostr-to-nostr communication.
• Long-form articles: Kind 30023 (this format) has become the standard for Bitcoin/Nostr thought leadership
• Zaps: Lightning-powered interactions are the core differentiator. Nothing else has this.
• Verification: NIP-05 verification links your nostr key to a domain. NIP-26 lets you delegate posting without sharing your private key.

§What Doesn’t Work

• Group chats: NIP-28 group chat is clunky. Most people don’t use it.
• Discovery: The algorithm for finding new people to follow is weak. You mostly find people through existing networks.
• Media: No built-in media hosting. Relies on blossom protocol (decentralized) or centralized services.
• Accessibility: Setting up a Nostr account still requires understanding keys. The onboarding UX is improving but still rough.

§The Honest Assessment

Nostr is the most viable decentralized social network that exists. It has real users, real activity, and a functional Lightning integration that no other platform has replicated.

It’s not replacing Twitter. It’s not replacing Instagram. But for the Bitcoin/crypto community that uses it, it’s become a genuine communication layer.

2. Generate a key pair (or import your existing nsec)
3. Find people by their npub or NIP-05 handle
4. Start posting, zapping, and engaging
