“Not your keys, not your coins” is the most repeated phrase in Bitcoin. But what does it actually mean to hold your own keys?

What Custody Actually Is
When you use Coinbase, Kraken, or any exchange, you don’t technically own Bitcoin. You own an IOU. The exchange holds the Bitcoin on your behalf. This is “custodial.”
When you move Bitcoin to your own wallet — where you control the private key — you own it directly. Only your key can move those coins.
What Can Go Wrong With Custodial
- FTX (2022): $8B customer funds vanished. 1 million creditors.
- Celsius (2022): Collapsed with $4.7B in user deposits
- Mt. Gox (2014): 850,000 BTC stolen — still unresolved 12+ years later
- Voyager, BlockFi, Genesis: More casualties of the same pattern
These aren’t bad companies because they were malicious. Most started with genuine intent. But when you control other people’s money, incentives get misaligned.
What Self-Custody Actually Requires
You need:
- A wallet that generates and stores your private key
- A “seed phrase” — 12 or 24 words that can recreate your key
- Physical security for that seed phrase
Hardware wallets ($50-$200) keep keys offline. Even a free software wallet on an air-gapped phone works.
The Seed Phrase Is Everything
Write it on paper. Multiple copies. Store in different locations. Never photograph it. Never type it into a computer. If someone gets your seed phrase, they own your Bitcoin.

- Buy a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor, or Coldcard are reputable)
- Generate a seed phrase IN YOUR HANDS, not on a website
- Write it down. Verify it. Store it in 2+ locations.
- Transfer a small amount first to test the process
- Done
