Compressing a Highlight Reel for a College Recruiting Profile
When I help a player put together a recruiting reel, I start with the length before I touch the file size. Most coaches I know will give a clip a short look, so I aim for a tight two to three minutes. If the best moments run longer, I cut the setup and keep the action. A reel that opens with a whistle and ends with a handshake is usually too long.
Clarity matters more than resolution bragging. I make sure the jersey number is readable at normal size, not just full screen. If the number disappears when the clip is small, I either trim that play or pick a different angle. Action should be obvious in the first second: who has the ball, who is making the run, what the result is. I avoid fancy transitions because they hide the play and add file weight.
I also add a simple contact frame at the start or end. It has the player’s name, graduation year, position, team, coach contact, and a link to the full profile if the platform allows it. I keep it plain and readable for a few seconds. That frame is often what a coach screenshots or forwards.
Before I compress anything, I test the upload. I put the original file into the actual recruiting portal or school form I plan to use, not just email. Some portals reject a file or take forever on a slow connection. If it fails, I check the portal’s current size and format guidance directly.
For compression, I use a tool that handles MOV files without making me learn a video editor. I upload the clip, choose a smaller output, and watch the action again at full size and at phone size. I use an online MOV compressor for recruiting clips when I need a smaller file that still keeps the jersey and the ball clear. I check the provider’s current terms myself, since limits can change.
My last pass is simple:
- Watch the first ten seconds on a phone.
- Confirm the jersey number is readable.
- Check that the contact frame stays up long enough.
- Upload the compressed file to the portal and play it back.
If all four pass, I send it.
