The Architecture of Power Chapter 2. The Island
In November 1907 the presidents of every major trust company in New York were locked inside a private library and told they could not leave until they agreed to save each other.
The man who locked the door held no office and answered to no voter. The Treasury Secretary came to New York, handed him twenty five million dollars of public money, and asked what he intended to do with it. For about three weeks J.P. Morgan was the monetary authority of the United States.
Everybody involved understood that was insane. Six years later America had a central bank.
Three years after that library, six men boarded a private railcar with the shades down. They arrived separately, brought hunting gear, and used first names only so the porters would not learn who was traveling together. They spent a week on a private island off the coast of Georgia writing a plan for the American money supply.
That trip is real. Every man on it later described it in print, in books you can still buy. Anyone who tells you Jekyll Island is a myth has not read the sources.
And then their plan lost. Badly, publicly, in an election.
So who wrote the thing we actually got?
