Walk into any courtroom in America and watch a witness get sworn. Right hand up. Tell the truth, the whole truth, so help you God. Nobody in the room believes the last four words. The bailiff doesn’t. The judge doesn’t. Half the time the clerk skips them and asks the witness to affirm instead. And then everyone proceeds as if perjury still binds a man’s soul.
It doesn’t, if the last four words are decorative. Which raises a question with no comfortable answer. Why is murder wrong? Because it violates the victim’s autonomy. Why does the victim have autonomy? Because persons have rights. What is a person? And there you are at the edge of the map, holding a legal system that assumes an answer it stopped being able to give.
