A Michigan Republican primary has produced an unusually stark test of political influence: a candidate who suspended his campaign defeated the contender personally backed by President Donald Trump.

Thomas Smith won the GOP primary in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District with just over 50% of the vote, despite stepping away from the race in mid-July. His victory came over Amir Hassan, a Navy veteran and former federal law-enforcement official who had secured Trump’s endorsement and appeared with the president at a campaign rally days before the vote.

The result is a setback for Trump’s otherwise formidable primary record. Hassan is reportedly the only Trump-endorsed House candidate this midterm cycle to lose a primary, while Trump later described his tally as “28 wins and one loss.” Yet his explanation also underscored the limits of a national endorsement when voters are unfamiliar with the candidate: Trump said Hassan was “a good person, very good, very respected, but nobody knew who the person was.”

The conservative framing emphasizes the race’s procedural oddity—“a candidate who suspended his campaign” winning over Trump-backed Hassan. The broader political picture is more complicated. Smith had raised only $1,850 through June 30 and struggled to file a campaign-finance report electronically, suggesting that the victory reflected neither a well-funded organization nor a conventional campaign operation.

Republicans now face the practical consequences. Smith had endorsed Al Lemmo after withdrawing, but Lemmo finished third. Lemmo has since revived his campaign and said he was “humbled and honored” to take on Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet. The district is politically competitive but still difficult for Republicans: its voters backed Trump for president in 2024 while electing a Democrat to Congress. Hassan, meanwhile, signaled resilience, writing that he was “disappointed not defeated.”
