The death toll from a school shooting outside Bangkok rose after a critically wounded 12-year-old girl died, turning an already devastating attack into a national shock. Conflicting reports about the final toll have added uncertainty to the aftermath.

The broad account is consistent across the reporting: a 14-year-old opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School on Friday before apparently taking his own life. Officials also said he appeared to have killed his two grandparents at their home earlier that morning. Five school staff members were among the victims, while many of those wounded were between 12 and 14 years old.

The principal difference is the casualty count. One report put the toll at “at least 8 people” after the girl’s death, while another headline cited police as saying it had reached nine. A separate conservative publication likewise described the toll as at least eight, reflecting the uncertainty that followed early, conflicting figures.

Beyond the numbers, the accounts point to two competing interpretations of the tragedy. The immediate focus is on the victims, terrified students and a community struggling to understand why violence erupted at a school. Witnesses described children fleeing into the street, while the school suspended classes and parents collected belongings left behind.

The wider concern is Thailand’s unusually high level of civilian gun ownership compared with its Southeast Asian neighbors. Authorities said the compact weapon was legally registered to the teenager’s grandfather, raising questions about access and safeguards even as relatives reportedly differed over whether the boy had shown signs of school-related distress.

The human reality was captured by restaurant owner Amporn Niamfuang: “Students were running scared and pouring onto the street. Young girls were holding each other’s hands and crying.” That testimony, more than the shifting totals, underscores the attack’s lasting impact.
