A Routine Police Flight Turned Into a Fatal Midair Collision
A routine training flight near a Pennsylvania airport ended in a fatal midair collision, raising immediate questions about how two aircraft converged near the runway. The crash killed the small plane’s pilot and injured both troopers aboard the police helicopter.
According to conservative-leaning coverage, the collision occurred around 7:50 p.m. near Carlisle Airport when a Bell 407 helicopter and a Cessna 150 came together during the helicopter’s training operation. The helicopter was reportedly conducting routine exercises near a grassy area, while the circumstances surrounding the Cessna’s flight remain unclear.
Pennsylvania State Police Acting Commissioner George Bivens offered the most specific account of the impact, saying the Cessna “veered to the right at the last moment” and struck the helicopter from behind, hitting both its tail and main rotors. That description suggests a sudden change in the airplane’s path, but it is not a finding of fault: federal investigators have not determined a probable cause.
The human consequences were clearer than the technical explanation. The plane’s sole known occupant died, while the two troopers were initially trapped inside the helicopter before escaping and being taken to a hospital. Gov. Josh Shapiro said the injured officers were expected to recover, offering reassurance even as the cause remained unresolved.
The competing perspectives are therefore less about the outcome than its interpretation. Officials describe a violent collision and point to the plane’s last-second movement; investigators must still establish whether that movement resulted from pilot action, a mechanical problem, visibility issues or another factor. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the inquiry, with the Federal Aviation Administration assisting. Until that work is complete, the account of a sudden veer remains an allegation—not an official explanation.
