China’s humanoid-robot industry is claiming record-breaking athletic feats, but the event also exposed how far headline performance remains from dependable everyday use.

At the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, a robot built by Beijing-based X-Humanoid reportedly ran 100 meters in 9.39 seconds, beating Usain Bolt’s 2009 human record of 9.58 seconds. A separate machine from the same company cleared 2.88 meters in the standing high jump, surpassing Javier Sotomayor’s 2.45-meter mark. The achievements were presented as evidence of China’s accelerating lead in humanoid robotics.

The comparison with human sport, however, is not straightforward. After finishing the sprint, the robots reportedly crashed into a cushion to stop and had to be removed on stretchers. Other competitors tripped, broke apart or caught fire—failures that would be disqualifying in athletic competition and that highlight the engineering challenges behind the spectacle. The event featured more than 2,000 robots competing in running, soccer and table tennis, turning technical demonstration into a carefully staged measure of national industrial progress.

That interpretation contrasts with the more triumphalist framing in the conservative account, which describes the machines as having “smashed human records” in both events. The wording emphasizes competition and technological dominance, while the fuller account places the records alongside visible mechanical failures and questions about practical deployment.

The stakes extend beyond sport. The United States has restricted some foreign-made humanoid-robot imports on national-security grounds and has scrutinized Chinese manufacturers’ alleged military ties. Beijing rejects those accusations, while Chinese companies claim large orders from government and private customers. Yet experts caution that the technology is still used mainly for demonstrations and performances and may need more time before reaching mass, real-world deployment. The records therefore signal genuine progress—but not yet reliable autonomy.
