A Laptop Fire Was Contained, but Questions About Injuries Remain
A laptop battery fire on an American Airlines flight was contained before landing, but conflicting accounts of passenger injuries reveal how quickly a seemingly manageable cabin emergency can escalate.
Flight 2398 was approaching Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Friday after departing Atlanta when smoke and flames were reported from a passenger’s laptop. Flight attendants placed the device in a thermal containment bag, and the Airbus A321 landed safely at about 6:55 p.m. Emergency personnel met the aircraft at the gate, where one passenger was treated and released.
The airline’s account emphasizes control and professionalism, saying the aircraft reached the gate under its own power and praising the crew for their “swift response to quickly contain the device.” The Federal Aviation Administration, meanwhile, said it was investigating and noted that lithium-ion batteries can enter “thermal runaway” without warning when damaged, overheated, overcharged or improperly packed.
Passenger testimony and air-traffic-control audio present a more alarming picture. Jessica Irgens told CBS News that the laptop began smoking roughly 30 minutes before landing, that heavy smoke spread through the cabin and that the device was placed in the aisle as passengers tried to help. The pilot reportedly told controllers that four or five passengers might have suffered burns, a figure that contrasts sharply with the airline’s confirmation of a single treated passenger.
The accounts are not necessarily mutually exclusive: a rapid crew response may have prevented a larger disaster, while the initial confusion could have produced multiple minor injuries. Still, the gap between the official summary and the cabin-level reports underscores the uncertainty that can follow battery fires—and why the FAA’s investigation matters.
