Five years after the Abbey Gate bombing killed 13 U.S. service members and roughly 170 Afghan civilians, the Pentagon has elevated the decorations of three Marines who kept working amid the blast’s chaos. Retired Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan Eby and retired Lance Cpl. Jordan Houston received Bronze Stars with valor devices, while retired Cpl. Michael Gretzon received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a valor device. The awards recognize sharply different but complementary actions: Eby rallied forces and restored security after much of his platoon was killed or wounded; Houston, himself concussed and under fire, pulled wounded Marines to safety; and Gretzon held an exposed crowd-control position so more seriously injured personnel could be evacuated.
