A deadly shooting in downtown Minneapolis turned a high-rise apartment complex and surrounding streets into an emergency zone, while conflicting early accounts made the scale of the violence difficult to establish.

Initial reporting from Hennepin County Medical Center said seven patients were received, including one person who died, with six others injured. A separate report identified two police officers among those wounded. Officials warned people to avoid the densely populated area around Loring Park and the Minneapolis Convention Center as armed officers and emergency crews converged on Loring Towers.

The sharpest divide emerged over the final toll. A conservative account reported that two people were killed and three officers injured, with the suspected gunman also dead; it said two officers suffered gunshot wounds and that all three were in stable condition. The earlier hospital-based account, however, confirmed only one death and six injured patients. The discrepancy may reflect the rapidly changing information flow during the response rather than a settled disagreement, but it underscores how incomplete the initial picture remained.

Authorities’ descriptions of the scene were more consistent. The response centered on the building’s eighth floor, with officers carrying long guns, armored SWAT vehicles and ambulances positioned around the complex. Witness accounts described an argument followed by multiple shots, while officials asked the public to clear streets between 12th Street and Franklin Avenue and Hennepin and Third Avenue South.

The political response emphasized support for law enforcement rather than an explanation of what triggered the shooting. Gov. Tim Walz said he was “grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors” and that “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.” FBI Director Kash Patel likewise said federal personnel would provide “any and all resources necessary” to local authorities. Those statements converged on the need for a forceful emergency response, even as the casualty count and sequence of events remained unsettled.
