A disputed strike on a wedding party in southern Iran has turned a renewed U.S.-Iran military exchange into a fresh test of civilian protection and credibility. Tehran says an American missile killed at least five people, including a child, while Washington says its forces targeted Iranian military infrastructure—not civilians.

Iranian officials and state-linked media described the attack in Kuhestak as a “war crime,” reporting that 68 people were injured at a private wedding. Accounts cited a four-year-old and a 16-year-old among the dead, while videos reportedly showed a collapsed roof, shattered windows and injured children in wedding clothes. Iranian officials also threatened a forceful response, framing the strike as evidence of American disregard for civilian life.

The U.S. account emphasizes intent and military necessity. Central Command said its latest barrage struck air-defense sites, radar, naval assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications facilities. Spokesman Tim Hawkins said, “The U.S. military never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC,” while declining to confirm whether the wedding site had been hit.

The two accounts overlap on the broader context: Washington is attempting to weaken Iran’s ability to threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran has responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S. positions across the region. They diverge sharply over responsibility. Iranian reporting points to missile fragments, witness accounts and nearby strikes; U.S. officials point to targeting doctrine and Iranian conduct.

That uncertainty is politically consequential. The reported wedding strike follows earlier allegations that a U.S. attack killed more than 100 children at an Iranian school—an incident Washington says remains under investigation. Whether the wedding was directly struck or hit by debris from an attack on nearby infrastructure, the episode shows how quickly a campaign aimed at military systems can produce civilian casualties—and a new cycle of retaliation.
