A Senate Showdown Over Jack Smith’s Testimony Collapsed Into a Basketball Mix-Up

A Republican effort to connect Jack Smith to Atlanta prosecutors unraveled when the former special counsel said he attended a Maryland-Iowa women’s game, not an Atlanta Hawks contest. Democrats said the error undermined accusations of perjury.

The Senate hearing was meant to scrutinize Jack Smith’s investigation of Donald Trump, but a disputed basketball memory quickly became the central clash. A Republican attempt to place the former special counsel in Atlanta instead collided with a confusion between the Atlanta Hawks and Iowa’s Hawkeyes.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, a Missouri Republican, asked Smith under oath about attending a Feb. 3, 2024, Golden State Warriors–Atlanta Hawks game—a date Schmitt linked to revelations involving former Fulton County prosecutor Nathan Wade and District Attorney Fani Willis. Smith denied attending the game, visiting Atlanta in his capacity as special counsel, or meeting Willis or Wade, except that he might have passed through the airport.

Schmitt said messages contradicted Smith and warned him against perjury before declaring, “I think you’ve already perjured yourself.” He later called Smith a “total dirtbag.” The Republican case was broader than the sports dispute: conservatives have long alleged coordination among the Biden administration, the Justice Department and local prosecutors pursuing Trump.

Smith offered a different account, saying he remembered attending a University of Maryland game against Iowa while accompanied by U.S. Marshals. “It was Maryland playing Iowa,” he said, adding that the date could be verified. That explanation fit the calendar: Iowa defeated Maryland 93-85 that day, with Caitlin Clark scoring 38 points, while the Hawks also hosted Golden State.

Democrats treated the overlap as evidence of a basic factual mistake, not proof of misconduct. Sen. Amy Klobuchar asked whether Schmitt had confused the University of Iowa’s Hawkeyes with Atlanta’s Hawks and later said Smith deserved an apology. The exchange exposed the competing perspectives: Republicans saw a possible lead about prosecutorial coordination, while Democrats saw an accusation built on a mascot mix-up.
