Mississippi’s Republican Stronghold Has Become an Unexpected Senate Nail-Biter
Mississippi’s Senate race has defied the state’s deep-red political profile, turning an expected Republican hold into an unresolved contest decided by a margin of only a few thousand votes.
With roughly 96% of ballots counted, Democrat Scott Colom was reported to be leading Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by just over 1,100 votes. Earlier in the count, the candidates were separated by only a few dozen ballots — an extraordinary result in a state President Trump carried by 20 points in 2024 and that has not elected a Democratic senator since 1982.
The competing descriptions of the race capture its central tension. A liberal account portrays Colom’s showing as a “surprisingly competitive challenge” that could give Democrats another Senate victory and expand their incoming majority. A conservative headline, by contrast, frames Hyde-Smith’s contest as a “sure-thing re-election” that has become a “dogfight too close to call.” Both perspectives acknowledge the same political shock, but differ in emphasis: one stresses Democratic momentum, while the other underscores the collapse of Republican certainty.
Colom, a 43-year-old district attorney and seventh-generation Mississippian, focused his campaign on the cost of living and health care. Democrats began investing heavily only in recent weeks, after recognizing an opportunity in a race that had long appeared nearly unwinnable. Hyde-Smith, 67, has served in the Senate since 2018 and is seeking a second full term.
Addressing supporters early Wednesday, Colom argued that the remaining vote favored him: “The results are all trending in our direction.” He added, “We are trending in counties that people thought we had no chance to compete in. And we’re winning them.”
The outcome could affect not only Mississippi’s Senate delegation but also the size of the Democratic majority, with Alaska’s race still outstanding as well.
