Kopaonik’s First Snow Turns an Early Cold Snap Into a Viral Sensation
An early-week cold snap brought wintry conditions to Serbia’s mountain regions, with snow reported across the south, southwest and southeast of the country. Kopaonik recorded around eight centimeters of snow early in the morning, while footage from Šar Mountain showed Brezovica blanketed in white.

The snowfall later stopped, but forecasts indicated that snow would remain possible in mountain areas in the following days, with the snow line locally falling below 1,000 meters. The conditions arrived more than a month before the planned start of the new ski season, creating an unusually early winter scene at one of Serbia’s best-known resorts.

Opposition coverage emphasized the contrast between the mountain and the lowlands, where autumn was still underway. It reported temperatures of about minus two degrees Celsius on Kopaonik and described the snow as producing a “real winter atmosphere.”

Videos of the snowfall quickly spread across social media. One Kopaonik video received more than one million views in less than 24 hours, prompting comments including “First snow in a free country” and “Just let it snow.” The competing accounts shared the same basic facts—the early snowfall, the measured snow cover and the mountain setting—but differed in emphasis: one presented the event as part of a wider weather change, while the other highlighted its viral impact and symbolic public reaction.
