Pro-government says flamenco, jazz and contemporary dance will give Romeo and Juliet a new stage life in Belgrade
The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet is scheduled to perform its interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at Belgrade’s MTS Dvorana on November 8. Organizers describe the production as a new reading of the tragedy, combining traditional flamenco, contemporary dance and jazz music.
The performance centers on the young lovers from the rival Montague and Capulet families, but shifts attention beyond their external feud. According to the organizers, the conflict also reflects “the inner struggles of the individual,” with flamenco’s forceful movement and rhythm conveying the characters’ passion and pain.
A second announcement identifies the event as a Sunday performance on November 8, 2026, beginning at 8 p.m. It promotes the production as the ensemble’s “most ambitious and revolutionary project,” pairing the raw intensity of flamenco with contemporary dance and jazz rhythms.
The newer staging is presented as part of the company’s broader practice of adapting classic literary and dramatic works through flamenco. Its earlier production Carmen, inspired by Georges Bizet’s opera, is cited as an example of that approach.
In this version, the family feud becomes a metaphor for both social hostility and personal conflict. The music is expected to combine jazz harmonies with traditional guitar sounds, while performer improvisation adds an element of unpredictability, according to the event announcement.
Tickets are available through Ticket Vision and the MTS Dvorana box offices, as well as online at tickets.rs.
