UK Imposes Sanctions on Russia's 'Shadow Fleet' LNG Tankers

The United Kingdom has announced a new package of sanctions against Russia, specifically targeting vessels in its "shadow fleet" that transport liquefied natural gas (LNG). The measures, which also target GRU officers and banks like Yandex Bank, will be presented at the upcoming G7 summit.

UK Imposes Sanctions on Russia’s ‘Shadow Fleet’ LNG Tankers Britain is turning the sanctions screw again — this time not just on Russian banks and spies, but on the tankers that secretly keep Moscow’s gas money flowing.

The UK’s new hard line

Opposition-leaning Russian outlets frame London’s move as a global first: “Britain imposes world’s first sanctions on Russian ‘shadow fleet’ vessels carrying LNG,” one report notes, highlighting that the package explicitly targets ships hauling Russian liquefied natural gas. Another stresses that “Britain will become the first country to include gas carriers for the transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in new sanctions against Russia,” underscoring the symbolic bite of hitting energy exports directly.

These sanctions go beyond ships. London’s updated list ropes in “gas carriers for the transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG), companies linked to the cryptocurrency network A7, and GRU officers,” expanding pressure from the docks to Russia’s intelligence and financing networks.

Shadow fleet versus shadow finance

Meduza notes that the package aims at more than just hulls on the high seas, targeting “a network linked to Russian authorities that has been involved in the covert procurement of Western technology for the Russian military,” as well as firms in third countries that help Moscow “move money illegally around the world.” The Ins similarly lists a roll call of GRU officers that London ties to sanctions‑busting schemes, including “the purchase of equipment and military technologies for Russia abroad through front companies.”

The financial net widens at home, too: “Yandex Bank” and “Wildberries Bank” are now under UK restrictions, alongside two firms linked to the A7 crypto payment system built with Promsvyazbank and fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor.

Carrots for Kyiv, sticks for Moscow

There is a parallel energy play: Britain will provide “£210 million for British nuclear fuel supplies” to Ukraine’s Energoatom, meant to help the country’s grid “survive the next winters and reduce vulnerability to Russian strikes on energy infrastructure.” In other words, London is betting that choking Russia’s shadow fleet while backstopping Ukraine’s power sector will matter more than Moscow’s ability to reroute tankers and money through yet another set of shadows.
