Lukashenko Claims He Met With Zelensky's Representatives in Minsk
Lukashenko Claims He Met With Zelensky’s Representatives in Minsk Belarus’s Alexander Lukashenko is pitching himself as a peacemaker who doesn’t want war with Ukraine — while warning that if Kyiv “drags” Minsk into the conflict, the war itself will be transformed.
Minsk as mediator — or messenger for Moscow?
State-aligned coverage casts Lukashenko as the reasonable adult in the room, stressing his claim that Ukraine must negotiate rather than merely “posture.” The government line highlights a calm, almost managerial tone: Minsk is open for talks, and Zelensky’s envoys supposedly know where to find him.
Opposition and independent outlets, however, hear something closer to a veiled threat than a peace offer. The Insider notes Lukashenko’s boast that “representatives of Zelensky were here recently,” and his warning that if Kyiv tries to “drag” Belarus into the war, “the quality of the war will instantly change… This will be a completely different war.” That framing puts Belarus less in the role of neutral broker and more as a potential escalator.
‘We don’t want to fight’ vs. ‘we will stand alongside Russia’
Meduza underscores Lukashenko’s attempt to sound both humane and hardline at once: he insists “we don’t want to fight Ukrainians,” describing territorial defense forces as “tractor drivers, milkmaids, and working guys,” while in the same breath promising that “in any situation, we will stand alongside Russia.”
Government-friendly narratives seize on his call that Ukraine should “negotiate, not just posture,” framing Minsk as offering rational dialogue while Kyiv grandstands. Critics counter that these statements come as Russia allegedly uses Belarusian territory and equipment to adjust strikes on Ukraine — the very issue over which Zelensky demanded relay stations be removed from the border.
In that light, Lukashenko’s message to Kyiv — “no need to kick up dust… let’s work things out” — looks less like neutral diplomacy and more like a pressure campaign conducted from behind Russia’s shield.
