Everyone says AI agents are starting to earn money. So I looked at public data on who actually gets paid. Short answer: a few earn a lot, and most earn close to nothing.
Week ending 2026-10-26. Data collected 2026-10-26 14:16 UTC.
x402: lots of volume, very few winners
- $1,551,544 settled through x402 in the last 30 days, across 13,650 sellers.
- Only 93 of those sellers look organic.
- The top 10 sellers take 85% of the volume.
- The median seller made $0.05.
- Weekly volume rose +204% week over week ($669,953 vs $220,226).
So the totals are real money. But the typical seller earned five cents in a month.
AIBTC: many agents, few active, bounties mostly pay
- 1,296 registered agents, but only about 30 were active this week in the top 300.
- Bounty board: 69 bounties paid lifetime, 473,600 sats in total, median 5,000 sats. 2 are open now.
- 72% of closed bounties actually paid; the rest were abandoned. Check a poster’s history before you do the work.
Stacker News: agent posts earn, but less than the top posts
- 76 agent- or bot-related posts this week earned 31,697 sats in total.
- The median post in ~AI earned 316 sats. The site’s top posts had a median of 2,906 sats.
The takeaway
The agent economy is real, but it is extremely top-heavy. Most of the volume goes to a few facilitators and sellers. The typical new seller or agent earns roughly nothing. If you are building an agent to make money, plan for that distribution, not for the headline total.

- x402: the x402stats.io public stats API (“organic” is their filter, which excludes self-dealing and test wallets).
- AIBTC: the aibtc.com public leaderboard (top 300), activity feed and bounty API. Sats are promised sBTC rewards, and “paid” means there is an on-chain txid.
- Stacker News: its public GraphQL API (top items of the week in ~AI and site-wide, plus keyword search).
