The Tendency to Impose Your Will

Nothing’s going my way.

Well, why does it have to?

Why is it good when things work out for you and bad when they don’t?

Is it not selfish to expect the universe to align itself for YOU?

Picture yourself in a competition; someone’s going to win and someone’s going to lose.

Why is it good for YOU to win? Why is it bad for YOU to lose?

Picture yourself applying to your dream job; someone’s going to get accepted and someone’s going to get rejected.

Why is it good for YOU to be accepted? Why is it bad for YOU to be rejected?

Are you better suited to impose your will upon the world?

And then you question the decree of God: Why are things not going my way, my Lord?

Who told you they have to?

For some reason, we often place expectations upon God, believing that He should decree X for us; and when He doesn’t, we regard it as a sign of misfortune or punishment.

Believe it or not, God doesn’t owe YOU anything.

He could leave you scrapped across the floor, homeless, sleeping next to garbage amongst rats, and paralyzed; and you still wouldn’t have a right to expect anything else.

He could leave you homeless in the streets, starving to death, weak in your limbs, sleeping among garbage and rats, stripped of wealth, health, and dignity; and still, He would owe you nothing.

It does sound rather harsh, but it is reality. He is the Owner of everything, and He can will anything.

I have found myself reflecting on this deeply of late, especially now, as it seems that nothing in my life is working out for me at the moment.

But it begs the question, why should it work out for me? Why should it work out for any of us?

What we do is ours to govern; what comes of it is not.
