Right-wing says police-pursuit crash demands answers
Right-wing coverage centres on the loss suffered by Karen Joseph’s family and presents the crash as the consequence of a police pursuit, while the oversight body says an independent inquiry is needed to establish what happened.
The deaths of Joseph, 62, and Roman Kalas, 19, have put scrutiny on a pursuit that ended in a collision in Stratford-upon-Avon. Joseph’s daughter, who was travelling with her, sustained minor injuries.
Accounts in the two reports agree on the central sequence: Kalas’s black Audi A3 collided with Joseph’s Ford Puma after police began following the Audi when it did not stop for officers. Both reports describe the pursuit as lasting about six minutes and say officers used emergency lights and a siren.
The framing, however, places particular emphasis on Joseph as an uninvolved motorist. One report describes her death as following a “high-speed police pursuit,” while noting that Kalas died at the crash scene and Joseph died in hospital days later. Another similarly says she died after a teenager “smashed into her car during a six-minute police chase.”
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has taken a more procedural approach, confirming it has obtained dashcam footage from the pursuing Warwickshire Police vehicle and is seeking CCTV, doorbell-camera and further dashcam material. Its director, Derrick Campbell, said: “Given two members of the public have died in an incident involving a police pursuit, it’s important that an independent investigation is carried out to establish the full circumstances.”
The reports also say the watchdog has spoken with both families and that inquests into the deaths are due to open. The investigation will determine whether the pursuit and the collision were handled appropriately; the available accounts do not set out any findings of wrongdoing.
