Wellbeing 2.3: Decentralized Gamification, NIP-58 Sovereign Badges & Full-Stack Telemetry Minting
A comprehensive breakdown of bringing decentralized gamification to personal wellbeing: implementing the NIP-58 badges specification across 6 native Android apps (v2.0.x), 6 Golang micro-relays (v1.8.0), and 6 web dashboards (v2.3.0) with cryptographic minting, NIP-55 Amber signing, and tiered sovereign achievements.
π 1. The Sovereign Achievement: Gamification Without Surveillance
Gamification in conventional fitness and digital wellbeing applications is fundamentally broken. When proprietary fitness platforms reward you with a badge for running a half-marathon or completing a 30-day streak, that achievement lives in a corporate database. If the company pivots, shuts down its servers, or bans your account, years of personal dedication vanish. Worse, your physical movement, sleep cycles, and daily screen habits are commodified, sold to data brokers, and used to train targeted advertising models.
With Wellbeing 2.3, we have deployed complete end-to-end support for NIP-58 (Badges) across the entire sovereign Wellbeing suite.
Achievements in the Wellbeing ecosystem are not cosmetic database flags in a walled garden. They are cryptographically signed, immutable Nostr events published directly to your personal micro-relays. You own the cryptographic proof of your physical and digital discipline. Any client, dashboard, or social profile across the open Nostr network can independently verify, celebrate, and showcase your milestones.

π 2. The NIP-58 Architectural Blueprint
NIP-58 provides a modular, four-event primitive structure designed to separate badge metadata from badge issuance and user curation:
| Event Kind | Type | NIP Function | Role in Wellbeing Suite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kind 30009 | Parameterized Replaceable | Badge Definition | Declares the badge identifier (d-tag), name, description, visual artwork, and unlock criteria. Issued by the application or project pubkey. |
| Kind 8 | Regular (Immutable) | Badge Award | The cryptographic certificate of achievement. Links to the Definition via an a-tag and designates the recipient via a p-tag. |
| Kind 30008 | Parameterized Replaceable | Badge Set | Categorized collections of earned badges curated by the recipient. |
| Kind 10008 | Replaceable | Profile Badges | The userβs active βwornβ badges displayed on their primary Nostr social profile. |
Anatomy of a Badge Definition (kind:30009):
Each application defines its badges with standard metadata tags, high-resolution vector artwork, and explicit criteria:
{
"kind": 30009,
"pubkey": "f839fb6714598a7233d09dbd42af82cc9781d0faa57474f1841af90b5c930939",
"created_at": 1788540000,
"tags": [

["name", "Centurion"],
["description", "Recorded 100 total days reaching your daily step goal."],

["thumb", "https://holyfit.scuba323.com/badges/centurion-thumb.png", "256x256"]
],
"content": "",
"id": "...",
"sig": "..."
}
Anatomy of an Award Certificate (kind:8):
When a milestone is reached, the application crafts an immutable Kind 8 award referencing the definition coordinates:
{
"kind": 8,
"pubkey": "f839fb6714598a7233d09dbd42af82cc9781d0faa57474f1841af90b5c930939",

}
ποΈ 3. The 30 Sovereign Badges Taxonomy
To provide meaningful progression, each of the 6 applications features a 5-tier achievement hierarchy tailored specifically to its telemetry domain:
πΆ 1. Holy Fit (Physical Movement & NIP-101h.9 Step Cadence)
- Century Walker: Logged 10,000 steps in a single day.
- Marathoner: Logged 42,195 total meters of movement over a rolling period.
- Centurion: Recorded 100 total days meeting your configured daily step target.
- Sovereign Strider: Maintained a continuous 7-day streak meeting daily step goals.
- Titan: Logged over 1,000,000 cumulative steps on the Nostr network.
π 2. Sister Charge (Battery Longevity & Power Discipline)

βοΈ 4. Autonomous Telemetry Evaluation & Mobile Minting Engine
In the mobile apps, badges are not manually awarded by an administrator. The apps themselves act as autonomous issuance authorities for the userβs sovereign identity:
[ Room SQLite Database ] βββΊ [ Milestone Evaluator ] βββΊ [ Badge Already Awarded? ]
β
βββ YES βββββββββββΊ [ Skip ]
βββ NO βββββββββββΊ [ Create Kind 8 ]
β
βΌ
[ Publish to Micro-Relay ]
Key Technical Safeguards:
- Local Deduplication: Before crafting an award, the app queries both local storage and the exclusive micro-relay for existing Kind 8 events containing matching
["a", "<badge-coordinate>"]and["p", "<user-pubkey>"]tags. This prevents relay bloat and duplicate issuance. - Flexible Cryptographic Signing:
- In Local Key Mode, awards and definitions are signed instantaneously using the appβs encrypted key storage.
- In Amber (NIP-55) Mode, the app delegates signing to the external Amber vault via Android Intent ContentProviders, preserving total private key isolation without blocking UI threads.
- Graceful Background Execution: Milestone evaluations run inside WorkManager tasks scheduled during daily rollover or following active sync events, ensuring zero impact on foreground application performance.
π 5. Web Dashboards v2.3.0: Interactive Badges Showcase
All 6 web dashboards have been updated to v2.3.0 with a dedicated Badges Tab:
- Real-Time Progress Tracking: Visual progress bars show how close you are to achieving the next badge tier (e.g.
84 / 100 Days (84%)). - Cryptographic Verification: Clicking any earned badge opens a detailed inspector displaying the issuing pubkey, the Kind 30009 definition coordinates, the Kind 8 award signature, and the block timestamp.
- NIP-07 Social Integration: Connect with your favorite browser extension (Alby, nos2x, Amber) to curate your active Kind 30008 Badge Sets or equip them directly to your public Kind 10008 Profile Badges.
πΉ 6. Golang Micro-Relays v1.8.0: NIP-58 Whitelisting & Performance
Because the Wellbeing suite operates on dedicated micro-relays running the Khatru engine and SQLite, we updated all 6 relay daemons to v1.8.0:
- Kind Filtering:
.envconfigurations across all relays were updated to whitelist badge kinds:ALLOWED_KINDS=...,8,30008,30009 - NIP-11 Discovery: All relays now proudly advertise NIP-58 support in their server metadata:
{ "supported_nips": [1, 9, 11, 58], "version": "1.8.0" } - Optimized SQL Indexes: Added compound indexes on
(kind, pubkey, d_tag)to ensure sub-millisecond retrieval of badge definitions and awards even under heavy query loads.
