The Meaning of De-Velopment
The Meaning of De-Velopment
We keep searching another tool, another framework, another method to feel equipped, prepared, ready. We wrap ourselves in strategies and armor, believing that one day, when we finally have enough, we will step forward and begin.
And don’t get me wrong, tools are helpful. They can point us in the right direction, give us structure and confidence, remind us of what we already know, help us to feel and be more professional… But somewhere along the way, the focus gets lost. We spend so much time en-veloping, instead of de-veloping.
By gaining more tools, we can lose track of doing the inner work… The real development is un-wrapping our inner layers… from old patterns, traumas that are stuck in our nervous system, beliefs like “I’m not enough,” blockages that keep us small, to the ego that armors us so tightly we forget who we truly are and what our purpose is.
Here is what the words themselves tell us: “Develop” from the Old French “desveloper”: des- (to undo) and veloper (to wrap up).
Development has never been about adding another layer. It has always been about removing them.
So what if the question isn’t “What tool do I need next?” but rather: “What do I need to feel safe enough to put the layers down?”
Because that is what true developing requires. Not more, more, more. But an environment, relationships, a community, honest moments with ourselves, where we feel safe to let go of our masks and ready to look at the blind spots, and start sharing who we truly are.
In this moment, we stop en-velop and start de-velop. We stop hiding behind what what we’ve gathered along the way and begin to show what was underneath all along.
Like a photograph in a darkroom, the image was always there. It just needed the right conditions to appear.
Like a seed, we need the right soil and the courage to break our own shell.
Michelangelo didn’t add more layers of marble to create David… he carved the marble away so David could come to the surface.
You are not a project to be optimized. You are not a toolkit to be completed.
You are light, ready to de-velop, to be seen and shared with the world. 💛
