The Mile-Long Ledger
On a bare hillside above the Pisco Valley in southern Peru’s coastal desert, a band of roughly 5,200 shallow holes stretches for nearly a mile. Each hole is three to six feet across and up to three feet deep. They march in orderly rows, divided into discrete sections, averaging sixty feet wide. From the air, the band serpentines up the slope — locals call it Monte Sierpe, Serpent Mountain.
For decades, the Band of Holes attracted speculation: a geoglyph like the Nazca Lines, a defensive fortification, a ritual procession route. Archaeologists Charles Stanish and Jacob Bongers used drone imagery to count the holes precisely and found mathematical patterns in their arrangement — specific numerical groupings within each section. Excavation recovered tiny traces of maize and wild basket-making plants, suggesting the holes had been lined with woven material and used to store goods.
The Band of Holes was an accounting system. The Chincha Kingdom, a pre-Inca coastal polity, likely built it as infrastructure for organized barter — a physical marketplace where goods were deposited, measured, and exchanged. The Inca later repurposed it for tribute collection and state accounting. What looked like a monument was a spreadsheet.
The misidentification lasted because the categories available for interpreting large-scale earthworks in Peru default to ritual or military: geoglyphs are symbolic, walls are defensive, terraces are agricultural. A mile-long row of holes doesn’t fit any of these, so it accumulated speculation rather than explanation. The function was bureaucratic — storage, measurement, trade — but bureaucracy doesn’t look like bureaucracy from the air at a distance of centuries. It looks like a mystery.
The Inca adoption is the confirming detail. The Inca had the quipu for abstract accounting. They inherited the Band of Holes and used it. If the holes were ritual, the Inca — who had their own ritual infrastructure — wouldn’t have repurposed them for tribute. They recognized the function because the function was legible: a physical ledger in rows, divisible into units, ready for a new administration’s numbers.
