"The Corrected Scribe"

Dating ancient manuscripts by handwriting analysis is one of paleography’s core methods. An expert examines letter forms, ligatures, stroke angles — the subtle evolution of scribal style over centuries — and assigns a date range. For the Dead Sea Scrolls, paleographic dating has been the primary chronological tool since the 1950s. The expert consensus forms the timeline that organizes an entire field.

The AI system “Enoch,” trained on both handwriting features and radiocarbon-calibrated dates, found that many of those assignments are wrong. Popovic et al. (PLOS One, June 2025) showed that multiple Dead Sea Scroll manuscripts are 50 to 100 years older than paleographers estimated. A manuscript of Ecclesiastes previously dated to 175–125 BCE was pushed back to 300–240 BCE — not a minor correction but a full century of displacement.

Enoch agreed with 79% of traditional paleographic dates. The remaining 21% were systematically biased in one direction: too young.

The mechanism is anchoring. Human paleographers don’t evaluate script features in isolation. They carry knowledge of historical periods — the Hasmonean era, the Herodian period — and this knowledge exerts gravitational pull on their dating estimates. A script that could belong to either of two periods gets assigned to the better-known one. The historical framework that organizes the evidence also distorts it.

The machine has no period knowledge. It sees stroke width, letter spacing, ink distribution, angular variance. It compares these features against radiocarbon-anchored exemplars without knowing what was happening politically in 200 BCE. This ignorance is the advantage. The features that humans subordinate to historical context — because context makes the analysis feel more grounded — are precisely the features that carry the chronological signal.

The machine sees what the historian’s period knowledge prevented them from seeing.
