The Silent Invasion
Invasive plants are silent. They don’t call, don’t sing, don’t produce sound. They spread, outcompete, and displace — but their impact is measured in biomass, species counts, and ecosystem function. Sound doesn’t appear in the assessment.
Barney and colleagues argue that invasive plants are acoustic engineers. Through two mechanisms, they reshape the soundscape of every ecosystem they colonize.
First, displacement. When an invasive plant replaces native vegetation, the animals that depended on that vegetation disappear — and with them, their sounds. Crickets, frogs, birds that nest in native shrubs, insects that feed on native flowers. Each lost species is a lost signal. The soundscape thins.
Second, absorption. Dense monocultures of invasive plants — kudzu canopies, Phragmites stands, Japanese knotweed thickets — create acoustic environments different from the native vegetation they replace. Sound propagates differently through dense uniform stands than through structurally diverse native communities. Animal communication signals attenuate faster. Species that rely on acoustic signaling over distance — territory defense, mate attraction, predator warning — find their effective range reduced.
The combination produces a measurable shift. Invaded areas have different acoustic signatures than non-invaded areas of the same habitat type. The shift is detectable before visual surveys register the invasion’s full extent — the soundscape changes before the species list does.
This makes acoustic monitoring an early warning system. A spectrogram can detect the signature of plant invasion before a botanist counts the stems. The silent organism reveals itself through the silence it creates.
The invader says nothing. The ecosystem says less.
