Make a child’s voice part of the plan.
Caring for young people calls for patience, humility, and clear boundaries. You might be a parent, a church volunteer, or an adult exploring how to help. Let Christ’s love shape your care. Work through the family or approved program, and listen before deciding what a child or family needs.
Child ChampionZ Hub offers The Youth Champion Guide as a free download, plus a free call.
Ask a young person about an interest before deciding what activity to suggest. Give them time to answer in a way that suits their age and comfort. They might prefer talking, drawing, or showing something they have made. Listen for what they actually say, and avoid assigning feelings or needs without checking.
Work within the family or program’s approved arrangements. A caring adult still needs the right permissions, supervision, and boundaries. Ask the program leader what your role includes and how to pass along a concern. You can show Christlike patience through ordinary actions: using a respectful tone, keeping an agreed commitment, and letting a child finish a thought. Choose a next step that fits your role and the young person’s expressed interests, then check it with the appropriate adult.
Before acting, check the family and program arrangements that apply. Know whom to contact with a concern, and keep your help within the role you have been given. Care and clear boundaries belong together in this work.
Picture listening before you suggest how to help. Before moving on, choose the question you want to keep in view. Write it in words that make sense to you. Set aside the details that can wait, and decide what information would help you take the next step with care.
