Why 'Renounced = Safe' Fails on $51M/Day of Trending BNB Pools: EIP-1967 Proxies vs Compiler-Bounded Governance
Retail token checklists treat ownership_renounced == true as a binary safety pass/fail. Today we ran an empirical test against all top 6 trending BNB Smart Chain pools on GeckoTerminal ($51,000,644 in combined 24h DEX volume) alongside our reference contract (PiggyBank (BSC) — 0x8d1e4E2b75441CeCC53e55d41B804105e198b4cc) — and immediately caught a giant blind spot in standard security APIs.
Discovery 1 — 5 out of 6 (83.3%) Top Trending BNB Pools Retain Active Ownership
Serious teams rarely brick future parameter tuning or protocol extensions by renouncing day one (AGT $28.47M/d, IRYS $10.82M/d, AKE $9.89M/d, DNA $761k/d, and JCT $90k/d all have ownership_renounced = false).
The real security boundary is not “renounced vs active” — it is whether active governance can arbitrarily mint, freeze, swap bytecode, or gate transfers vs operating inside immutable compiler guardrails:

Why GoPlus Returned None on $10.8M/Day IRYS and JCT (and the 8-Line Fix)
Both IRYS and JCT are EIP-1967 upgradeable proxies whose proxy bytecode holds 0 selector dispatchers — all logic lives behind storage slot keccak256("eip1967.proxy.implementation") - 1 (0x360894a13ba1a3210667c828492db98dca3e2076cc3735a920a3ca505d382bbc). Reading that slot via eth_getStorageAt and pulling eth_getCode on the implementation address unmasks mint(address,uint256) on JCT and pause() on IRYS in <200ms.
