Microsoft formally unveiled Project Solara as “a new platform built from the ground up to power agent-driven experiences,” explicitly designed for gadgets that run AI agents rather than traditional apps. Built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), Solara includes a lightweight OS, enterprise-grade security and management via Intune and Entra ID, and “just-in-time UI” that adapts interfaces to each device.

Nadella described it publicly as “a new platform purpose-built for agent-first devices,” underscoring a strategic partnership with Qualcomm on the silicon side.

Onstage, Microsoft showed two Solara reference designs: a desk companion and a wearable badge. The desk device resembles an Echo Show-style hub with facial recognition and ambient access to AI agents, and can turn into a Windows 365 thin client via USB-C. The badge reimagines a corporate access pass as an “always-connected AI companion” with touchscreen, fingerprint sensor, camera, and multi-mode connectivity, enabling on-the-fly transcription and hands-free agent queries.

Microsoft isn’t planning to ship these prototypes directly; instead, they are reference designs for manufacturers, with companies like Best Buy, CVS Health, Levi’s, AccuWeather, and Target preparing pilot programs.

Journalists framed Solara alongside Microsoft’s new in-house reasoning model MAI-Thinking-1 and its Scout agent, interpreting the trio as an effort to show Microsoft is a “serious player in AI above and beyond its relationship with OpenAI.” Axios noted that Solara targets small devices such as earbuds and speakers, broadening the hardware canvas for agents.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s Cristiano Amon highlighted a broader industry shift “from apps and operating systems to agents,” suggesting Solara is one manifestation of a deeper rethinking of how users interact with computers.
