Data Shows Anthropic's Claude Gaining on ChatGPT in Paid Subscriptions

According to credit card transaction data, Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude is seeing significant growth in its paid consumer base, challenging the market dominance of OpenAI's ChatGPT. While ChatGPT still has more users overall, the data suggests Claude is rapidly gaining momentum with paying customers.

Data Shows Anthropic’s Claude Gaining on ChatGPT in Paid Subscriptions Anthropic’s Claude, long seen as a niche tool for developers, is rapidly emerging as a serious rival to ChatGPT among paying consumers, even as OpenAI’s chatbot maintains a commanding overall lead.

Early trends: transaction data points to a shift

From early 2025 through May 2026, credit card analysis firm Indagari tracked billions of anonymized transactions from about 28 million U.S. consumers, focusing on subscriptions and API token purchases for AI tools. The data shows that “consumers who pay for AI chatbots are increasingly choosing Anthropic’s Claude over competitors,” with Claude’s paying user base and revenue up roughly 75% since January 2026.

A separate but aligned analysis similarly reports that Claude’s paying consumers and revenue are “currently up about 75% since January 2026” in this transaction sample, reinforcing that the growth is sustained and not a one-off surge.

March spike and political controversy

Growth accelerated in March after Anthropic refused to allow its models to be used by the Trump administration for “mass surveillance of Americans and autonomous weapons,” a stance that triggered a spike in sign‑ups. Notably, Indagari’s data shows Claude’s gains “continued even after” that initial surge, suggesting the controversy catalyzed but did not solely drive the expansion of its paid user base.

Education platforms signal rising consumer interest

On DataCamp, an AI education platform with about 20 million users, interest in Claude has “exploded since the start of the year.” The company says “Claude” is now the most searched term on its site, surpassing even “AI,” and that demand for Claude courses has grown 18x in the past 30 days. Among self-directed learners, Claude courses are outpacing ChatGPT by three to one, though ChatGPT remains more popular in enterprise training.

Market dominance and IPO stakes

Despite these gains, ChatGPT still dominates consumer usage by a wide margin, recently surpassing one billion monthly users and remaining “far and away the most popular AI with consumers, in every way.” Sensor Tower data shows Claude growing across platforms but still trailing ChatGPT significantly.

The emerging pattern—ChatGPT as the massive incumbent and Claude as the fast‑growing challenger among paying users—matters as both Anthropic and OpenAI prepare for IPOs, where recurring consumer subscriptions may weigh heavily in investor assessments.
