OpenAI bets Yelp can make ChatGPT’s local answers more useful
OpenAI’s latest push to make ChatGPT more useful in everyday life now runs through Yelp. The new partnership shows how AI companies are leaning on established data platforms as users increasingly ask chatbots, rather than search engines, where to eat, shop, or hire help.
Under the deal, Yelp will license reviews, photos, ratings, and other business information to OpenAI, giving ChatGPT a live stream of local recommendation data for user queries. That means ChatGPT responses are expected to include richer business details drawn from Yelp, rather than relying only on the model’s broader web knowledge.
From Yelp’s perspective, the arrangement is less about competing with AI than getting inside it. Axios reports that Yelp branding and links will appear when OpenAI uses its content, even if OpenAI controls how that experience looks. Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman framed the company’s leverage bluntly: “If you want to answer local queries, you really need Yelp.”
The two reports also point to a practical next step: transactions. Yelp’s “Request a Quote” feature is expected to be added to ChatGPT, allowing users to reach local service providers directly through the chatbot. The Verge similarly notes that users will be able to contact local businesses through ChatGPT, extending the tool from recommendation engine to lead-generation channel.
The broader tension is clear. For OpenAI, proprietary local data can make chatbot answers feel more current and trustworthy. For Yelp, licensing lets it preserve relevance as AI systems begin to intercept searches that once went to conventional platforms. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the partnership suggests both sides see more value in collaboration than confrontation.
