Meta pushes its AI deeper into daily life, but rivals still look ahead
Meta is trying to turn its chatbot from a conversational tool into something closer to a digital assistant, expanding its role from answering questions to managing parts of a user’s day. The update shows how the company is leaning harder into productivity at a moment when the race to build truly useful AI agents is accelerating.
The new features let Meta AI connect to tools such as Google Calendar and Gmail so it can help organize schedules, plan events, and assemble daily briefings. That marks a noticeable shift in emphasis for a company whose AI ambitions were previously framed more around entertainment and social connection than office-style utility.
Meta is presenting the change as part of a broader push toward what it calls “personal superintelligence,” with the upgrade powered by its Muse Spark 1.1 model. In practical terms, the company says the assistant can handle recurring tasks after a one-time setup, help with research, and even support projects like shopping for furniture or planning meals around a user’s schedule.
But there is also a more cautious reading of the update. Axios notes that these are early steps toward a personal AI agent, not a clear lead in the category. Meta’s software can now reach into calendars and email for useful context, yet it still appears narrower in scope than competing systems from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, which are described as better able to manage a wider range of tasks and operate independently for longer stretches.
That leaves Meta in a familiar position: ambitious in vision, but still chasing rivals in execution. “Meta is making its AI chatbot more like an assistant” may be the clearest summary of the moment. So is Axios’s framing that Meta is taking “first steps toward a personal AI agent.” Together, those two views capture both the promise of the update and its limits.
