Google’s latest spending spree isn’t on chips or chatbots. It’s on electricians — a blunt reminder that the AI boom still depends on flesh-and-blood workers to build, wire, and power the infrastructure behind it.

The company says it will put $10 million into training programs meant to prepare 100,000 electricians and 30,000 apprentices across the US, targeting a labor shortage that is now colliding with two big pressures at once: the clean-energy buildout and the race to expand AI data centers.

That shortage has become a bottleneck far beyond Silicon Valley. On one side, utilities and policymakers need more skilled workers to connect new renewable power to the grid. On the other, Google and its rivals need vast amounts of electricity — and the people capable of building the systems that deliver it — to keep up with energy-hungry computing demand.

The labor picture is unusually clear-cut. While much of the AI conversation fixates on which white-collar jobs software might replace, the physical buildout is pulling in the opposite direction. As The Verge put it, these are among the “Jobs AI Isn’t Killing: Electricians, Plumbers, and Carpenters.” In markets crowded with data-center construction, demand has turned into what one report described as a “modern-day gold rush,” with long hours, overtime pay, and bidding wars for skilled tradespeople.

That leaves Google’s announcement looking both practical and self-interested. The funding may help ease a genuine workforce crunch and support grid modernization, but it also underlines a less glamorous truth about AI: before the algorithms scale, someone has to pull the wire.
