Meta wants your AI to run your day, but it’s still playing catch-up
Meta is pushing its chatbot into more intimate territory: not just answering questions, but managing pieces of your day. The bet is simple enough — if AI is going to matter, it has to become useful — but the harder question is whether Meta is arriving early to the future or late to a race its rivals already lead.
The company’s latest update gives Meta AI more agent-like behavior, letting it connect with tools such as Google Calendar and Gmail to assemble daily briefings, help with research, and assist with practical planning tasks. The Verge framed it plainly: “Meta is making its AI chatbot more like an assistant.” Axios described the move as “first steps toward a personal AI agent,” an important distinction because Meta is pitching ambition here more than dominance.
That’s the central split in how this rollout lands. On Meta’s side, the update is part of Mark Zuckerberg’s bigger campaign around “personal superintelligence,” with the new Muse Spark 1.1 model meant to push the assistant beyond chat, image generation, and lightweight drafting into recurring, semi-autonomous work. The promise is convenience: set a task once, let the assistant keep working.
But the skeptical read is just as clear. Axios notes that Meta’s software “remains less powerful than those of rivals” and that agents from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic can handle a broader range of tasks for longer stretches on their own. In other words, Meta is no longer avoiding the productivity fight; it’s entering it from behind.
The broader AI world is already grappling with what more autonomous systems require. One tweet circulating in that conversation highlighted “endpoint visibility into AI agent activity,” underscoring how tooling, oversight, and control are becoming part of the agent era too. Meta’s update may be incremental, but it points to the same destination: AI that doesn’t just respond, but acts.
