AI’s loudest Wall Street bet just ran into the market’s oldest rule
Leopold Aschenbrenner’s hedge fund made the kind of wager that looked brilliant on the way up and brutal on the way down. Situational Awareness rode the AI boom hard — then sold most or all of its public stock portfolio to Citadel after the trade turned savage.

The basic argument for the fund was not crazy. Aschenbrenner built his reputation on the claim that advanced AI would demand enormous spending on chips, compute, memory and energy, and for a while that thesis looked vindicated. TechCrunch noted the fund had returned 439% through June and at one point reportedly swelled to as much as $45 billion. Business Insider’s read is that the deeper lesson is less about AI being overhyped than about markets punishing even investors who may be directionally right but structurally fragile.

That fragility is where the story turns. Multiple reports say the fund sold its public equities to Ken Griffin’s Citadel as AI infrastructure names slumped, especially chip-related bets. Axios framed it bluntly: an “AI-focused hedge fund sells all of its stocks.” The Financial Times similarly described Citadel buying the holdings after “steep AI losses” and overnight crunch talks with investors.

Coverage diverges mostly on what this collapse means. The Verge treats it as a parable of hubris — right down to the name, joking that maybe “we shouldn’t give 24-year-olds billions of dollars to bet on AI” and mocking a fund called Situational Awareness for lacking exactly that. Business Insider is harsher about market mechanics than personal style: being smart, even early and right, does not protect a leveraged investor when sentiment breaks.

There is one important caveat. TechCrunch reports the fund may have dumped public positions, but it still holds private assets, including a major Anthropic stake. So this looks less like the death of the AI thesis than a violent unwind of one highly leveraged way of expressing it.
