Apple May Put Its Smarter Siri Behind an iCloud+ Paywall

Tim Cook says Apple is considering paid iCloud+ upgrades for users who want heavier access to its delayed Siri AI, potentially bringing the company in line with OpenAI and Anthropic’s tiered models.

Apple’s long-promised Siri overhaul may arrive with a familiar trade-off: basic access for everyone, but a higher bill for those who use it heavily.

What Apple is considering

CEO Tim Cook said Apple is exploring iCloud+ upgrades that would let customers access more computing power for its enhanced Siri AI. The proposal is not final, but it points to a shift in how Apple could monetize artificial intelligence: rather than charging for Siri outright, the company could fold premium usage into its existing cloud-subscription business.

“We do believe there will be people that want to use [Siri AI] a lot,” Cook said, adding that Apple could offer “upgrade possibilities on iCloud+, where people can buy up the stack.”

The approach would mirror the strategy used by AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which offer limited free access and reserve higher usage limits or more capable models for paying customers. Apple already imposes daily limits on some server-powered Apple Intelligence features, making a premium tier a logical — if potentially unpopular — extension of the current system.

Why the timing matters

The upgraded Siri is expected to roll out broadly with iOS 27 this fall, after repeated delays left Apple playing catch-up in the AI assistant race. The new version is designed to understand what is on a user’s screen, act across apps and provide a ChatGPT-like standalone experience.

That makes the subscription question especially sensitive. Apple is asking users to wait for capabilities it previously highlighted, while now signaling that its most demanding features could cost extra. At the same time, iCloud+ is already part of Apple’s expanding services business, which recently generated $30.74 billion in revenue. A Siri power tier could turn delayed AI ambition into another recurring subscription — but risks making Apple’s comeback feel paywalled from the start.
