Hank Green Slows Down After AI Use Sparks a Personal Reckoning
Hank Green’s experiment with AI has collided with the demands of constant online production, prompting the YouTuber to apologize and reconsider how quickly he works.

The controversy began with a recent Complexly video, where viewers noticed Green saying “I appreciate the pushback” in a way that sounded like an AI chatbot’s reply. The moment fueled speculation that he had accidentally left part of a chatbot exchange in the script.

In a since-deleted post on X, Green said the video had been made “under a ton of pressure” and acknowledged using ChatGPT “for research on this script.” He maintained that the disputed line was actually directed at the episode’s guest, not copied from an AI response. Still, he later said he was “mortified” that he had “let so many people down.”

Green’s longer Reddit apology drew a sharper line around his use of the technology. He said he had used ChatGPT to “locate papers and other resources for learning about topics,” while insisting that the words and opinions remained his. But he also conceded that critics were right to accuse him of “diluting” himself.

The issue, Green said, was not simply whether AI had written his scripts. It was whether relentless interaction with language models was damaging his judgment, creative identity and connection with his audience. He described the dopamine from “doing more and more and more and more” as “not healthy for me or good for the world.”

That admission has immediate consequences. Green said he would pause or reduce uploads across his YouTube channels, and that one channel “may need to pause” while he readjusts. He plans to return to writing-heavy projects and more spontaneous, unscripted videos—but first, he says, he must make sure viewers can trust that his words are his own.
