Hank Green Pulls Back After AI Use Tests His Bond With Fans
Hank Green built his reputation on making complicated subjects feel personal and trustworthy. Now, his admission that AI had crept into his research process has forced him to confront whether speed was hollowing out that bond.
The dispute began after viewers noticed the phrase “I appreciate the pushback” in a Complexly video and speculated that a chatbot response had slipped into the script. Green said the line referred to the episode’s guest, but acknowledged in a later deleted X post that he had used ChatGPT for research while working “under a ton of pressure.”
As criticism mounted, Green moved to Reddit on Friday with a fuller apology. He said AI had helped him locate papers and resources—not write his words or determine his views—but conceded that his process had become too rushed to offer viewers a clear guarantee of that distinction. “I have been relying too heavily on AI as a research aid,” he wrote, adding that it had kept him from finding his own paths through a subject.
The immediate consequence will be less output. Green said hankschannel “may need to pause,” while his daily word games SMUSH and 4x3 will also stop for now. His aim is to return to work whose writing he can fully stand behind, including more direct, unscripted videos.
Green’s critics see an authenticity problem compounded by a tool known to produce confident errors and trained on others’ work. But the wider reading is more complicated: using a chatbot to surface research is not necessarily the same as outsourcing thought. Still, his confession lands amid early warnings that repeated AI use may encourage cognitive offloading and weaken the habits tools replace.
For Green, the sharper issue is personal rather than technical. “The level of dopamine I’ve been getting from interacting with LLMs… is not healthy for me or good for the world,” he said. “It is careless, and has disconnected me from where people are on this.”
