Google Gives Assistant Its September 4 Deadline as Gemini Takes Over
Google is setting a hard date for the end of the familiar Android voice assistant: September 4. In its place comes Gemini, a more ambitious AI system that also asks users to give up the option of going back.

The shift has been building since Gemini arrived, and Google had previously indicated that Assistant would disappear from most mobile devices in 2025. That timetable slipped while Gemini was refined. Now, an email sent to users says the retirement will begin on September 4 and may take weeks to reach everyone.

The immediate change reaches beyond phones. Google says users will lose the ability to use or switch back to Assistant on Android phones, tablets and paired devices once access is removed. That puts Wear OS watches, headphones, earbuds and Android Auto-equipped cars on the Gemini track as well. Cars using Google built-in, however, keep Assistant for now; Google Home and Google TV also appear to be outside this first cutoff.

For users in regions where Gemini is available and whose devices meet its requirements, the choice is effectively over: Gemini becomes the only assistant. Older hardware and unsupported regions may get a temporary reprieve, but the broad direction is unmistakable.

Google’s case is that Gemini is ready to take over. Yet the replacement changes the character of a basic voice command. Assistant was narrower but predictable; Gemini can handle richer conversation and call tools for tasks, while sometimes wandering off course or failing to recognize a tool it can use. As one account put it, users are being moved from “the limited but predictable Assistant” to “the powerful yet confounding Gemini chatbot.”
