Google Promotes Demis Hassabis as Jeff Dean Takes AI Ambitions Outside
Google is betting that its most celebrated AI scientist can think further ahead with less operational baggage. At the same time, one of its longest-serving engineers is taking a high-stakes vision for machine-driven science beyond the company’s walls.

The reshuffle lands as Google faces mounting pressure in frontier AI, where delayed model releases and fast-moving rivals have sharpened the contest. Demis Hassabis is giving up the day-to-day chief executive role at Google DeepMind to become chair of the unit and Alphabet’s chief scientist; DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu will lead the lab and report to Sundar Pichai.

Hassabis framed the change as a bid to focus on the long game. “I’ve decided that now is the right time for me to hand over my day-to-day operational responsibilities at GDM,” he told colleagues, “so that I have the time and space to focus on the big picture.” Pichai cast the appointment as an expansion, saying Hassabis would also continue leading Isomorphic Labs and could devote himself to “shaping the future.”

Then came the other half of the news: Jeff Dean, a Google veteran since 1999, is leaving after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop with Sanjay Ghemawat and other prominent former Google AI researchers. The public-benefit corporation says it wants AI systems to run complete experimental loops at massive scale—shifting science from slow, sequential human work toward automated discovery.

Dean’s venture is not simply a break with Google. Alphabet is among its backers, and Pichai said Google would support the company. But it underlines a tension inside the AI race: Google is concentrating Hassabis on its internal frontier while helping an influential cohort pursue the same scientific frontier from outside.

Discovery Loop’s founders argue that “the next great frontier for AI is to go beyond answering questions and to begin making discoveries.” Google’s answer is to place Hassabis at the center of that future—without asking him to run every part of the present.
