Grokipedia’s Six Million Articles Can’t Hide Its Silence
Grokipedia was pitched as Elon Musk’s AI-powered answer to Wikipedia. Now the project’s most conspicuous feature may be what it has not done: update.

The encyclopedia launched as version 0.1 in October 2025 with 885,000 AI-generated entries, then moved to v0.2 the following month. Its live counter now lists more than six million articles, suggesting enormous scale. But the site’s own “Recent changes” area says, “No live edits available right now,” while a report by Lawfare found that entries appeared to have been frozen since April 24.

That matters because Grokipedia still invites users to propose new articles and suggest corrections. Yet in a sample of 34,519 pages with suggested edits, Lawfare found 225,496 recommendations and no accepted or rejected corrections dated within the previous three months. “As far as we can tell, no entry has changed in more than three months,” the outlet wrote. xAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and Musk’s last known X post mentioning Grokipedia was in February.

The apparent halt has fueled speculation among users that the service is dead. Its defenders could point to the vast published catalogue; its critics see a platform that can generate material at scale but may not be maintaining it once it is online.

Wikipedia, meanwhile, has moved faster than its would-be challenger. Commenters noted that Wikipedia’s own Grokipedia article already records the reported lack of updates and cites the reporting behind it — a neat, if pointed, illustration of the difference between a living, collaboratively edited reference work and an AI encyclopedia whose edit pipeline appears to have gone quiet.
