Google Bets on Hassabis’s Big Picture as Jeff Dean Walks Away
Google has reshuffled the leadership of its AI empire at precisely the moment it can least afford uncertainty. Demis Hassabis is leaving the daily grind of running DeepMind; Jeff Dean, one of Google’s foundational AI figures, is leaving altogether.

The changes landed Wednesday as Google faces persistent pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic, delayed releases for Gemini 3.5 Pro and a fight to improve its standing in AI coding. Hassabis will become Alphabet’s chief scientist and chair of Google DeepMind, while DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu takes day-to-day command of the unit, reporting to Sundar Pichai.

Hassabis framed the move as a deliberate escape from management duties, saying he needed “the time and space to focus on the big picture and help influence what is to come.” Pichai cast the reorganisation as an effort to sharpen Google’s edge, saying the company must “accelerate all this work and stay focused on the AI frontier.”

But the timing has invited a harsher reading. Outside observers saw a company losing influential talent while rivals sprint ahead on commercially potent coding tools. One former Googler called the scale of the change difficult to overstate, warning: “More talent will be leaving.” Google, for its part, has not linked the reshuffle to model delays.

Inside the company, the interpretation is more mixed. Some employees see Hassabis’s new remit as a chance to pursue the scientific leaps — from world models to medicine — that made DeepMind distinctive, rather than chase chatbots. Others view the revised structure, with Kavukcuoglu named senior vice-president rather than CEO, as another sign of DeepMind’s diminished independence.

Dean’s departure adds another fault line. After 27 years at Google, he is joining Sanjay Ghemawat and other former colleagues to launch Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation aimed at automating machine learning, science and engineering. Pichai said Alphabet would support the venture. Employees responded with affectionate “Jeff Dean Facts” memes — but also called it a “sad day for Google.”

The company’s wager is clear: free Hassabis to chase the next breakthrough while retaining enough institutional strength to survive today’s AI race.
