Meta Opens Glimmer, but Keeps the Biggest AI Prize in Reach
Meta is putting a capable AI agent onto consumer hardware—and drawing a line around how much of its best intelligence the public can truly own.
On Monday, the company released Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion-parameter, open-weight model built to run locally on a Mac or PC with a single consumer GPU. Under the permissive Apache 2.0 licence, developers can download and modify it for agents that write and debug code, use tools, manage files and work through longer tasks. Meta says local processing could make agents handling schedules, messages and personal files more privacy-sensitive than cloud-based alternatives.
The launch is the most concrete expression yet of Mark Zuckerberg’s push for “personal superintelligence”: always-on software that can work with or without an internet connection and, in his framing, help users manage everything from careers to home life. Zuckerberg said Meta was “opening the weights for Muse Glimmer,” calling it a 30B-parameter dense model that can run locally, and pledged that the weights for Muse Spark 1.2 would follow soon.
That promise carries an important qualification. Glimmer is essentially an open version of Muse Spark, but the company’s more powerful Muse Spark model had remained closed-weight. The release therefore broadens access to an AI system while preserving Meta’s control over the frontier capability—a distinction between affordable use and genuine ownership.
The technical pitch is deliberately practical rather than maximalist. At 30 billion parameters, Glimmer is far smaller than Chinese rivals such as Alibaba’s 2.4-trillion-parameter Qwen3.8-Max and Moonshot AI’s 2.8-trillion-parameter Kimi K3. Yet Meta’s supporters argue that the point is deployment: a model that can run on 24GB of VRAM “without losing agentic reliability.”
Glimmer makes Zuckerberg’s vision tangible: personal AI that stays close to the user. It also makes the unresolved question sharper—how much of the most powerful AI Meta is prepared to put in their hands.
